Elevation is a diverse community on the growing edge
of MCC Portland. Our Mission is to:
- excite others to explore connections to the Divine;
- challenge one another to love in meaningful ways;
- actively stand in solidarity with those in the margins.
All of this to share the hope we continually discover.

Elevation Series:

Elevation is an innovative, contemporary worship service with great music and interactive discussion. Elevation began in December 2004 when a group of people from MCC Portland decided a new type of worship service would better meet their needs.

Elevation is known for the great group of people that come each week and the “feel it in your chest” music led by the Elevation Band. The band performs both cover and original music, and they have just recently released their second CD.

Our pastor's primarily role is not so much to preach a sermon, but to lead a discussion. He guides us as we talk openly about a Higher Power, faith, love, true friendship, sex, and other topics relevant to everyday life.

The most important thing about the discussion time is that Elevation is about the pursuit of more and more questions... not answers. We find there is more to be gained in asking rather than answering.

Here is a quick overview of a normal night at Elevation:
First and foremost, we have a good time. This is not a “religious” place, but it is a spiritual place. It is a place where we can encounter the Divine, and yet a place where we can laugh, and joke around. After enjoying great music led by the Elevation Band, our pastor leads us in discussion.

There is no sermon at Elevation. We share and learn together. After the message, there is “a time of giving and receiving.” Two things happen during this time. First, this is a chance to give financially to help Elevation continue. If you are a visitor, this is not something you should feel obligated to participate in. This is something the “regulars” do because they have made a commitment to this group. Second, everyone is invited to receive during this time—to receive communion along with a prayer or participate in a ritual of some kind. Participation in communion is always optional but open to everyone.

Elevation then concludes with music by the band. Afterwards, we typically share some pizza or other food downstairs before heading out. Come and check us out —at least you will get a free meal!

Elevation is about more than just getting together on Sundays. Because we have developed true friendships here, we also enjoy being together just for social purposes. Some things we have done include whitewater rafting, hiking, camping, barbecues, and weekend retreats. These are often the times when we get to know each other best and make meaningful connections. If you would like to participate in the planning of Elevation events or gatherings, email the church and they'll put you in touch with our planning team.
